Start Date
2008
Brief Description
This project was developed by Iowa Advocates for Mental Health Recovery. It was funded through the 2008 Campaign for Mental Health Recovery state implementation awards.
Results
This organization compiled written stories of hope and recovery into a book by culturally diverse adults who self-identify as mental health consumers. The project recruited participants throughout the State of Iowa and trained 60 people in writing workshops led by professional writers. Individuals submitted 48 stories, and the project selected 13 of them for publication in a 37-page book entitled “Stories of Survival.” Copies of the book have been printed for distribution to various audiences through book signings, new releases, speaking engagements, classroom presentations, and Web site exposure. Iowa Advocates for Mental Health Recovery also continued their “Healing Voices” project training 15 additional speakers and giving more than 75 presentations.
