Brief Description
This project was developed by the West Virginia Mental Health Consumers' Association. It was funded through the 2008 Campaign for Mental Health Recovery state implementation awards.
Results
The organization developed and trained individuals to monitor and respond to media that present inaccurate portrayals of people with mental illness. They used letters, personal meetings, and interviews to provide accurate information to the media and the community on mental health and related topics as a means of reducing stigma. They also developed and coordinated a speakers’ bureau and gave 13 presentations to a variety of groups attended by more than 250 people. The organization also held a public service announcement (PSA) contest for students at West Virginia State University. First and second place winners were chosen from eligible submissions and may be used in future social inclusion activities.
